Household Hazardous Waste

This course provides 24 Hour Health and Safety training for common operations of a collection facility for household and/or conditionally exempt business hazardous waste. Much of this material is equally applicable to collection events. This training should benefit operators of facilities and events by reducing the risk of chemical exposure and other hazards to the public and staff and reducing the risk of accidental discharges to the environment. (3 days; optional written exam)

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Reduce the risk of hazardous materials exposure to the public and facility workers
  • Reduce the risk of accidental discharges of hazardous substances to the environment
  • Assist in fostering public and regulatory acceptance of the on-going operation of collection operations

Who Should Attend

Collection facility staff, health department staff, building officials, CESQG inspectors and technical assistance staff, state and local regulators, and other HHW/CESQG professionals who have responsibilities related to handling of these wastes.

Course Content

The course manual is the Household Hazardous Waste & CESQG Collection Operations Training manual, a cooperative project between the North American Hazardous Materials Management Association (NAHMMA) and SWANA. This manual covers common OSHA topics applicable to HHW collection operations and may satisfy a significant part of hazardous materials classroom training requirements for operations and supervisory staff in states that have such requirements. In addition to extensive classroom activities, the following topics with supplemental images, graphs, tables, and examples are covered.
